Protect your Pen Drive from being affected by Malicious Viruses

Sometimes our computers in a public lab creates a havoc when you insert your flash drive in USB port. The host computer which is most of the time affected by lots of viruses, worms etc senses the drive and starts attacking before you can move your mouse. Sometimes your data is lost or corrupted, And you give a damn to that PC.

We can do the same thing intelligently :-) So What you need to do for safeguarding your data on flash drive?

The answer to this very important question can be: Before plugging the drive, disable the writing mechanism first so that no program can change the bits on the drive.

How to disable the writing mechanism?

Step 1: Open the Registry editor. you can do the same by "regedit" command on Run or command prompt.

Step 2: Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies\WriteProtect

Step 3: Flip the bit to Enable Read-Only mode

Note: Make sure you undone the changes in registry after your work.

Though this method is not checked up to forensic level but it works at least logically.

If you're not a geek and no idea of registry editing and have a fear of doing the above things wrong, Don't worry we have a small application, Thumbscrew which do the same thing by a simple toggle switch.

Monsoon is the only season
when u remember somebody without reason
the tinkling rain pearls on the leaves
reminds u of the moments u once weaved..

the days that never had the sand of balance
as they say "no reason to fall for a reason"
starting to believe in these adages is you the PERSON.

You sit by the window or in the garden among the green lushes
feeling the days of college remarkably a period of crushes
the laptop n the coffee mug by the side
may be are the only friends who abide
distance strengthens the bond of any hood
but it also separates the leaves from the wood
As the days pass these leaves blow far away
and the tree also grows beyond the pathway
In directions u go leaving memory lanes
new chapters being written, remembering the past only
when it rains.

Oh droplets why do you remind me of 'ed's'..
when all I want is live in the present..
for this season gives me is not only pleasure
but brings back the days that were carefree laced with leisure
when my spirit was the slave of 'curiosity'
days n nights passed a without 'responsibility'
As I end dis I know after years another will be typed
when the season of life will change and arrives the MONSOON much hyped.

For all those who I call my friends,who were anytime there within good or bad,the ones I have had crushes on,the once who liked and perhaps do like me,my BEST FRENS(more then 1),my partners in crime and in good deeds,people who have praised me and consider worthwhile,for ONES I have met walking somewhere sometime and have liked and finally for the ones who remind me of the droplets during the MONSOON.

How to get rid of autorun.inf from pen drives or hard disk

Hi friends,
Today the cyber world is experiencing some serious problems. especially with the fast spreading trojans,viruses and scripting programs. We too have seen our college computers flodded with such trojans and viruses and these spread to our home computers via pen drives. And the worst part is that despite having good anti virus softwares installed at our placed, they failed to delete such files.

The crux f this problem lies in the autorun.inf or autorun.exe that executes secretly as soon as we open our hard disk or plug in our infected pen drives. These are normal files which help to create som tojans or viruses as the case may be and hence anti-viruses ignore them. Examples of files created by running of such files are 3xxx.cmd,t.com, i.com, VirusGuard.vbs MicrosoftPowerpont2007.exe and so on. So if today you open your hard disk drive or pen drive and found that your anti- virus software is detecting such files then beware these can spread to entire system.

To find out whether autorun.inf file exists in your system, go to dos prompt or command prompt (using CMD) and whichever drive you feel is infected, go to that drive. just press tab key and see if autorun.inf name appears. If it does appear then using edit autorun.inf try to figure out the name of files that it creates . After exitting the editor you can further use tab key to find all such files in your drive.

Once you have analyzed the drive, type the following to commands:

Attrib -h -s -r autorun.inf
del autorun.inf

Attrib -h -s -r autorun.exe
del autorun.exe

And then verify that they are gone by using dir /ah command.

Use the same commands with all filenames that you saw in the editor like
Attrib -h -s -r VirusGuard.vbs
del VirusGuard.vbs

In this way you can get rid of such hidden threats. For some viruses you might ned to restart PC as well.

Well this is a general solution though some good anti viruses like nod, quick heal etc can do that itself...

So just clean your PC and spread the solution for this problem to all.

Age of Microblogging

Micro-blogging is a form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates (usually less than 200 characters) and publish them, either to be viewed by anyone or by a restricted group which can be chosen by the user. These messages can be submitted by a variety of means, including text messaging, instant messaging, email, MP3 or the web. - Definition by Wikipedia

They are much popular and their frequency of updates are much higher than the regular blogs. Since the updates are very brief, the information is transferred to the point and in summarized form. Even sharing the contents like images, URLs, multimedia etc is very easy as micro-blogging services are integrated with the main applications.

The most popular service is called Twitter, which was launched nearly 2 years back and it won various awards for the element of Innovation and Usefulness. It has the potential to outbreak with any other application and can be expanded to various uses. Recently, it came in news as Chinese tweets the Earthquake disaster within few minutes. All updates are in real time and can even fly through SMS too. Many developers across the universe see it as a potential tool to feed information and therefore developing many applications and APIs which even we can use in our application. Just need that sense of innovation in us. ;) Even @Hillary and @Obama used it in their political campaigning and @Dell for its customer relations. So where are you on twitter?? @anjulsahu

Another notable services are pownce, tumblr, jaiku (now acquired by Google). Status updates are becoming so popular that social networks like Facebook, Orkut, MySpace etc are using them in their applications. I hope soon we have twitter integrated with Orkut too. It's already available on FB and MySpace.
With increasing services, their related applications are also increasing evidently like right now there are 209 twitter apps and growing.
Recently Business Week wrote an article on twitter - "Why Twitter Matters".
Those 140 chars of yours can be a root for a revolution and can even manage your life.

SENSE, SENSIBILITY AND MADNESS!!

The girl was asking every passerby “I want to paint the Mountain of God, can u tell me where would I get the paint colors?” People thought she was mad and without giving a vocal answer they depicted from the gestures alone what they thought of her. Has somebody simply asked” where do I get paint colors here” he/she would have got an entry ticket to the world of sane i.e. our world.

There is a very thin line of distinction between sanity and being considered mad. I used the word considered because madness is a relative term. Perhaps people (a part of them) can consider me mad too for choosing to write on a topic which is not a favorite among the readers of youth. But certainly the desire to write what one wants prevails badly and so this. And this probably is the line of that distinction: people considered mad have that desire like us but they have the freedom to execute and express it too. Like I am sitting in a party and have a nauseous feeling, I have the sense (I believe it to be sense!!) to control this feeling till I reach the washroom unlike the Ms (considered mad=M) who will not control there will to do anything not thinking what others will think about them. THE PEOPLE factor which guides our lives is absent from theirs.

Ms generally want to cut all their links to the outside world due to the trepidation of loosing their freedom of expression. Here by freedom I do not only mean the Physical activities of presenting oneself but the mental ability to extend your wants and get out of the domain of” code of conduct”.

Being mad is just living in our own world and being different. But as we look into the History, Einstein and Columbus were initially considered mad too .As Amir Khan said in TZP “Unhone duniya ko apni alag nazar se dekha……” Human tendency works in such a way that it discards any out of the league thought for the first time and subjects it to debates and criticism. Later all of us end up studying Einstein’s Relativity Theory.

Let’s discuss a story to actually understand the world –

A Wizard wanted to conquer a whole kingdom. He went to the City well and poisoned the water. Whoever drank from it showed unusual signs of madness laughing loud, running around and clapping for no reason. The King however drank from a different well and thus was not effected, he tried to control the situation but the people were insane and they considered the King who wasn’t like them to be mad (understand that the King was now different from them behaving differently) and hence they wanted to throw him from the throne. The King and his family were afraid and they decided to leave the Kingdom forever. However in the morning the King decided that he and his family will also drink from the poisoned well. This way the King too started behaving the same way as others were and continued to rule for a long time.

People considered sane thus are only sane in the sense that they do same things as others may be including, wearing a half meter cloth for a dress after all its fashion and being fashionable is being sane isn’t it?

Another parameter associated with madness is Control. A loss of control can be confused with being mad but they are different altogether. Control can be in 2 forms-You control the mind or let the mind control you. The former we all have done in our lives .Stay mad but behave normally or in league i.e. control your mind but do not let the fear take over you. But what is the Real you here, It’s what you are and not what others think or make of you.

So a M actually doesn’t mean being ill treated or loosing some control it just allows you the freedom of execution and expression without the right to stand for any Political post [:P].

The maturity with which she shapes our life by providing us values which helps us to tackle every situation in life ……… the sensitivity

that made her understand our feelings when we r not feeling comfortable ………. The great tolerance power that always keeps her calm even when anyone hurt her ……..and the unconditional love that shields us from distracting situations ………So in all a perfect assembly of qualities in the form of a creature called ‘The Mother ‘

Shez always there for u ……recall all those moments as…..giving u the name by which the world knows u ….. encouraging u to speak the first word ……… the time u start walking on two legs from that childish walking …….. those sleepless nights that u hv made her to spent despite her exhaustive day work ………. teaching u all the daily activities …….. taking an initiative to build u’r career by choosing the best school …….... those yummy tiffin packing in the morning …….. constant interaction with u’r teachers to analyze n improve u’r performance ……….. those regular homeworks n satisfying u’r all anxities n queries ……….. making u imagine the world by drawing , painting ………….. n the same moments go on for yrs to shape u …….. to make u strong enough to compete with this world

Mother’s day …… hmmmmmmm I don’t think that we need to allocate a separate day all in a yr for realizing the importance of a lady who is 24*7 engaged in upbringing us without any profit motive …….. When we share such an awesome relationship with a person , everyday should be made memorable for her ………..

I know that we all r busy in various phases of our life ……. establishing ourselves socially, economically … that we forget to express our feelings to her ……. But realizing the importance of relationship we all must try to find some time from your busy schedule to express u’r feelings coz that some words really play a vital role for her life ………..

It’s quite ironic that I h’d seen many a children not valuing their mom coz she is doing only household chores n not earning money as dad…….. but it’s high time to make them realize that this job is much-2 more tougher n valuable that any of the other jobs n it’s her efforts only that r making u capable of earning ………….

Shez really special for all our life. So love u’r mother and keep her Smiling always :)

This is the inference of my chat with Mr G who is working in IBM and right now working in US for a client.

Chat:-
G: What's your joining date and location?
me: hmmm...I don't have any information regarding it.
G: There is too much recession in US economy.
me: so what? will it affect my joining? or anything else.
G: Yeah!! Joining will get delayed.
G: And you need to work for more days in a week...may be 6 or 7.
me: Ohh!! :(

So the bad thing about this is that, we will be getting late joining and need to work more per week due to such recession in economies. Last such decline was observed in year 2002 and the current scenario is very much similar to 2002's situation. Just hope that our companies survive to such crappy thing.

Internet Explorer 8 Launched : Quick Review

Today, Microsoft launched the beta version of Internet Explorer 8 for the web designers and developers.

They tried to become social with "Activities" - Activities are contextual services that provide quick access to external services from any web page like bookmarking on social networks, look up services, sharing, translations etc. (Our mozilla browsers already provides such features with enormous addons, Microsoft is late again as usual).

Another feature they are talking of is webslices, It is very much similar to RSS and they figure out one more technology name as a feature instead of famous RSS feeds. ;)

Choice of Layout Engine-
This is one good feature which is very much required to make the web compatible with IE legacy. For example, I am creating a website according to standard of IE7 and now someone browse with older version of Internet Explorer, then there is a possibility that my website will not work properly. To provide backward compatibility, they introduced the choice of layout engine. ( Nice Step!!)

Cascading StyleSheet 2.1 compliant
Now same rendering of pages as in Mozilla or in other browsers... No more programming for tricking IE browser

More Performance and more security - It was expected by default. Nothing New.

Phishing get a new name - "Domain Highlighting".... Now address bar gets highlighted, If phishing occurs.

So one must update with the latest IE8, if they still use Internet Explorer. But before taking this step, please check the requirement. Because, anything possible with Microsoft as it was in the case of Vista. [ I am still waiting for the Vista SP1 release for Individuals, its almost 1.5 yrs of launch :(]

What's next after Orkut

Hi folks,

Once when search queries on Google reached 10,000 per second in 2001, Oxford had to include google as a verb in their prestigious dictionary. It's now the time to include Orkut, because the whole world is orkutting but I think there is a limit to that also. Don't you think, you're bored of it and decreasing your online time on Orkut.

The recent trends according to pluggd.in mobile communities are attracting Indians like webaaroo's smsgupshup.com (our group is already present here). But what about Facebook which recently attracted Microsoft and pressurized Bill Gates to invest in it. Bill invested on 1.2% stake in Facebook this year. Now what's new in Facebook which is not in Orkut.

Orkut is also trying to add the concept of third party web applications in it's sandbox version. Currently, It is in baby stage and not everyone is allowed to use it. The new & very much required OpenSocial from Google which isn't GoogleSocial is the API created for developers which allows you to create apps for this social world. Though, Google always try to hide himself from the Monopoly Mirror but This mirror is getting transparent And you can judge yourself that the whole world is One that's Google One world. From search engine to email and now Mobiles too ( don't you heard of Google's new initiative ANDROID. Android is a new operating system for mobiles and its vision is to low down the Smart phone price by 400 % expected to hit markets in March 2008.). Google is becoming a life partner which supports us at every moment of life. It is the life-line of our life. Its brand name covers other useful services underneath.

we're currently facing web 2.0 and 3G which is already a newer technology for us but you should know Web 3.0 and 3.5G which is next? Officially released version of web is 2.1 currently and 3.0 is in labs of Amazon.com and Google.com... :)

Easy the web would be, tougher it's management would be.

Day by day the number of web applications are appending in this already huge list. Our average time spend on each site is becoming is lesser and we're wasting our quality time in roaming from one network to another instead of finding right services.

There is a need for a solution for this.

Zero Days Over!!

One month of difference as I call it. We guys at the college have undergone a weird and should I call it an 'amazing' one month of campus recruitment with companies pouring into the college from all directions to grab the students with both hands. The whole one month stint known as "Zero day" in our institute was one mind-boggling learning experience to say the least. People who have been hired and those who haven't been ,have all experienced life with a totally different perspective. In this piece of text I am presenting my crazy outlook of how crazy things have been in this one crazy month.

One Month of Difference

The clandestine sixth semester exams had already made a mockery of us. We, future engineers, had faced a cruel reality. You can give it your all in the exams but it may or may not matter. The universal answer "it depends!" will always answer all your questions to life. The same thing happened yet again! The examination papers forced us to review our syllabus every time we went home after the exams, puzzled and infuriated. But , the time ahead was even more demanding .All of us had to prepare for the battle that lay ahead.

The sole purpose most of us were doing engineering was what was ahead of us, this holy ritual is called "CAMPUS RECRUITMENT". One month lay ahead of us to recollect all our ammunitions [if we had any] or temperorily arrange for some[that's my case ;)] and to go in and give it the best shot. I am reminded of Eminem who says

"You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime yo,"

And the music had begun. The first fifteen days, We worked really hard at it. We watched English movies to improve our English and then Hindi movies to relax. The geeks left the geeky things and started to mug up programs and the muggers ,well they continued what they were best at, mugging! As far as I am concerned, I was playing the role of a domestic animal in my cousin's impending ring ceremony. My friends ,well they were making me and others like me scared coz every time I talked to them they kept telling me that another technical subject had been revised.

As they say "time flies when you are having rum!".

On 15^th of May I analyzed my position and found myself really under the gun. This whole under the gun scenario was not new to me. In fact it struck me with a feeling of dejavu and I experienced a rare flashback. When I was preparing for my entrance exam for college the whole thing was pretty similar and in fact at that time also I had suffered some indigestion. :) .This not so nice thought of indigestion made me bounce back to the present and I did call the shots finally on no one but my-lazy-self.

The next fortnight went long and hard. Unlike the last fortnight there were no 'supposedly motivating' lectures from the TPO , nor were any of us watching any movies[This is an assumption ;)] The man who achieved a lot of fame during these days was Mr. Yashwant Kanetkar. Out of nowhere he came and the very next moment everyone was enquiring others how much of his text had been gulped. Even orkut had changed a bit .now people used to ask "kitna hua?" instead of "kya chal raha hai?".not that any of these make sense anyways.

Being an ITian I was supposed to complete at least "THE data structures" apart from 'C'. And as always I failed to do DS ,I tried hard though, even in dreams I found myself falling from the tree onto a stack of thorny books. 'pushing' my brains into data structures I always found myself forcefully 'popped' out! Finally I made a tough call,I decided to do other subjects instead.

The day had come ,the month of difference had started and to get the weirdness going ,it started on 31^st of may!

Wipro people came in for the ppt and the HR said good morning, the crowd cried aloud as a reply as if everybody wanted to wish him from the bottom of their hearts. The HR was seeming to me like some bouncer of some bar [acc. To what I have seen in movies] He was like a genie who was going to make our wish come true. A hundred and six people got through and were able to rub the lamp successfully. Luckily I was among them as well. The call was made past midnight and all of us went haywire.

The sixth semester results came the same day. As I said earlier "IT DEPENDS".In engineering , time and again you have to remind yourself that u r not the one to call the shots. The results came like a high tide and washed all the hopes that some of us had carved out in sands by working hard for a month. And the craziest part is that we'll never know who has done the damage to out goddam careers. I felt really sorry for all those friends of mine who got an atkt in the most important semester of our engineering and thanked god that it didn't happen to me.

Then came Infosys and even the so called 'BAD GUYS' were fighting for a place in this company driven by values. They took 71 guys. Companies kept pouring in and people kept on getting selected. And people kept on getting rejected as well, falling and then rising again the next morning, recollecting all their energies and giving it in once again. They reminded me of Neo from The Matrix who keeps on rising even the though the Agents keep hitting him. But these agents from the software companies were not as adamant ,the results brought smiles to many faces and tears to a few, but at the end of the day they brought a new strength to everyone of us. I, at least was wondering what divine spell I was going through. I appeared for three companies and was selected in all three of them. And in my house my mom was wondering how all the three companies have committed the same mistake. I revived some respect in the eyes of my relatives and friends to whom I was good to nothing until I got selected.

The whole process also affected the economy ,And all of a sudden the shops selling sweets near the college ran into some profit. People at Gurukripa though incurred some loss because now it seemed mediocre to go there. the economic consequences were so grave that everyday I had the wallet full of money in the morning and the next day I had to borrow some more money.

The biggest joke hidden in all this fuss was that every single fella was craving for a purely technical job! God help me! How can farzi engineers like us drool over technicalities!

Anyways it has now got over and as per lines from Enrique's song

"It's hard to just forget the past to pass
It was good, it was bad, but it was real
And that's all you get in the end of the matter"

Anyways if I had one occasion to pick from this one month ,that I'll always remember then it will be the moment my friends ,who were not selected in wipro ,hugged me on me getting selected .That moment was one when I realized what friendship is all about and how lucky I am to have that with me!

My name is Akshat Saxena, from IT 3rd year (June 2008 passout), SGSITS. I had spent a full day at Amdocs on 12/3/07, and the following is based on what I learnt there.

What Amdocs expects from Candidates

Strong proficiency in the following areas:
· Excellent Communication Skills
· Oracle/SQL : Amdocs is a leader in CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and Billing sector and thus expects individuals to have command over database concepts and SQL
· Unix : Amdocs expects us to have good understanding and working knowledge of Unix/Linux OS along with shell commands etc. Concepts are important rather than mere Shell programming.
· Pseudo Codes: A person must know how to solve a problem written in some English sentences and vice versa rather than having a technical problem definition.
· C : Every software expert is required to have knowledge about C with pointers, functions etc.
· Knowledge of Java will be of an advantage.
· Application : Amdocs wants that people must be thorough with their concepts and must also know how to apply those concepts to problem solving.
· Eligibility: MCA, UG/PG of Comp/IT/E&TC With 60% aggr and no pending backlogs. (Whether E&I will be included – this is not yet confirmed).

My own (Akshat Saxena’s) opinion:

Friends , merely appearing for a company is no good if you appear for the sake of appearing. You must prove your potential which will help you to succeed in your coming years and for that some effort on your part is desired. So, start is important and I think it’s a high time to start your preparations. So friends, please make an early start to get a decent reward and most important be true to yourself.

The 80/20 Rule about Telecom Industry:

About 20% of the jobs are in core telecom technology whereas 80% of the jobs are in services for the telecom technology users. (Amdocs focuses on this 80% slice.)

The Amdocs facility at Magarpatta City (Pune) is excellent. Per person, they have 14 sq ft of cubicle space, which is 40% more than the legal requirement is of 10 sq.ft. per person. That is like flying Business Class (vs. Economy Class). (These data are not official figure, but are based on some candid conversations)
